The Wild and Wonderful Nepal: Trekking in Nepal

The first thing you’ll probably want to visit and the most important cultural edifice in Nepal as well is Boudhanath Stupa, a very recognizable site assigned UNESCO since the late ‘70s, one of the world’s tallest and certainly the most towering in the country.

‘Stupa’ literally means “heap” – it is a mound-like or semi-hemispherical structure containing Buddhist relics, typically the ashes of Buddhist monks, used by Buddhists as a place of meditation; and when it comes to stupas, Nepal is one of the places to be.

While in pre-Buddhist times the stupas were used for the burial of important people of the time, its meaning today suggests the presence of a culturally considerable monument. Its over 100 feet height is one of the reasons for which the Tibetans very often call it the Great Stupa. As it is the holiest Buddhist temple outside Tibet, this cultural artefact is very rich in symbolism, looking like a giant mandala (diagram of the Buddhist cosmos) from the above. Alike any other typical mandala, four of the Dhyani Buddhas mark the cardinal points as the fifth, Vairocana, is treasured in the center. These five Buddhas fetch the symbols of the five elements of nature: earth, water, fire, air and ether, never missing in any stupa’s architecture and very artsy represented in every other cultural space.

As the suggestive and symbolic meanings of the Buddhist monuments is highly important and richly represented in the stupa, with its nine levels representing the mythical Mountain Meru, the cosmic center and the path to enlightenment illustrated by the thirteen rings from the base to the pinnacle. The sixteen sided wall that surrounds the stupa at the bottom is sketched with frescoes in niches, very colorful and content-wise suggestive, inspiring peace, happiness, freedom and understanding. As you walk towards the stupa, there are three large platforms that bring into being the base of the monument. They’re decreasing in size and symbolize the earth. If you choose to stop and admire the marvelous natural landscape depicting in front of your eyes, you are going to experience a sensation of synesthesia when hearing the chants of the prayers doing kora.

There are thirteen steps topping the square tower of the pyramid, each representing the ladder to enlightenment. The element of fire is abstractly expressed by its triangular shape, while on the edge of the tower there’s a gilded canopy embodying the air with a gilded spire above it symbolizing the ehter and the Vairocana. All these symbols put together as well as their reccurence make the Boudhanath Stupa a meta-symbolic construction with distinct levels of suggestion, sagacity and profoundness. Along its very popular name as a destination for tourists, the site is a massive cultural edifice for the pilgrims who decide to come here for meditation and quiet time, be it by introspection or just by visiting the surroundings.

The cultural copiousness of the place is not only given by this monument alone, but by the other over 50 monasteries and shops praising the Tibetan artefacts. The old men with maroon robes and shaved heads are all monks directing and advising the pligrims in the area. In March or February there are large celebrations for Losar. The wide variety of amazing traditional costumes the inhabitans and prayers wear for what is their New Year celebration doesn’t make them look less like a family becasue of the welcoming, friendly attitudes they have. The respect they’re raised to have for the cultural differences – be them on the shade or on the color – is one of the reasons why many touristst go there annualy to celebrate along, regardless of the religion or cultural beliefs.

Nepal Himalayas Bird

Nepal is a paradise for birds lovers and ornithologists with over 848 species (8% of the world total) of birds. And among them almost 500 species are found in the Kathmandu valley alone. The most popular bird watching spots in Kathmandu are Phulchoki, Godavari, Nagarjun, Bagmati River, Taudaha and so on. Get your binocular and look forward to a rewarding experience. The best time for bird watching is March and December. Royal Chitwan National Park is one of the favorites for bird watching in Nepal, which offers 450 species of birds. Among the endangered birds are the Bengal florican, Giant horn bill, Lesser florican, black stork and white stork. Common birds seem in the park include the peafowl, red jungle fowl, and different species of egrets, herons, kingfishers, fly catchers, and wood peckers. Moreover, more than 45 species of amphibians and reptiles are visible in the park.

A fully inclusive and varied tour (apart from lunch and dinner in hotels Kathmandu and Pokhara) allowing the an ideal opportunity to view birds in a variety of ecological locations and at various altitudes. From The Terrai plain in the South of the country at almost sea level to our Study Centre in the Annapurna Himal situated at an altitude of 6,400 feet. Commencing within the exotic Kathmandu valley we travel to the wet lands of the Terrai plains and on to the dense Jungle terrain of Royal Chitwan National Park.We continue to the wonderful lakeside setting Pokhara with arguably the most impressive mountain backdrop anywhere in the World and birds to match. A days hike follows, for an exclusive three day stay at our Study Centre in the Annapurna Region. A total birding experience in the time available which in terms of species is very hard to match anywhere in the World.

Historic Trail Runs
Some exceptional runners have recognized Nepal’s potential, yet their incredible exploits are not widely known.

Has anyone heard of the Crane brothers who crossed the Himalayas from East (Darjeeling) to West (Rawalpindi) in 101 days? OK, they cheated a bit by taking a plane across the Indian-Pakistani border: no other options in 1983. Look for the description of this run, minimally supported with new supplies at only a couple of places, 5-6 kilogram (11-13 pound) packs, and a live-off-the-land approach, in Running the Himalayas, only available second hand.

A rock cairn marks the way on a Nepali mountain trail.

In 1988, Mary Margaret Goodwin took 90 days to run the breadth of the country. In so doing, she became the first female and the first solo runner to accomplish the feat. She didn’t go completely alone as she took along her dog. She enjoyed the back up support of a trekking agency.

Six years later (1994), two Frenchmen, Bruno Poirier and Paul-Eric Bonneau, were self-sufficient in crossing the country from East to West. The book written about this trek has not yet been published. This crossing was repeated in 2003 by Rosie Swale Pope, who went on to later run around the world.

Nepal is a country with three distinct ecological zones, the flat extension of the Gangetic plane in the South, the Middle hills and the Central Himalayan chain (including bits that are already part of the Tibetan plateau). Unlike most major mountain areas, the middle hills and the higher elevations are quite populated, home to a dense network of trading trails connecting villages. Many of those villages have turned the traditional custom of offering a bed and board to itinerant merchants into thriving mountain lodges open to everyone.

Increased (jeep) road building is beginning to eat into some of the tourist trekking areas that have emerged on this existing trail infrastructure over the last four decades. That said, the trail running possibilities remain virtually endless!

A town and glacial lake as seen from some of the remaining Nepali singletrack.

Apart from being able to run almost anywhere and find accommodation and food (however basic that might be), what makes trail running in Nepal unique are the people and their culture. You get the laughing “Namaste! Namaste!” from groups of small children walking to their distant schools. You negotiate with yaks for space on the trail. Then you take hot sweet tea in a monastery before you finish an evening by the fire in the kitchen of a lodge drinking local chang, the local homebrew.

Buddhism is an integral part of the fabric of everyday life in the countries of the high Himalayas, especially in Tibet, Nepal, the tiny Kingdom of Bhutan, and northern India. Lumbini Nepal is considered the birthplace of Buddha and as such, is sacred to those of the Buddhist faith, as are Bodhgaya in India where Gautama Buddha achieved enlightenment and Svayambhunath and Bodhnath in Kathmandu. It is as holy to Buddhists as Varanasi is to Hindus and the Western Wall in Jerusalem is to the Jewish people.

Buddhist pilgrims embark on Lumbini travel as do Christian pilgrims to Lourdes in France (the second most visited Christian site after Rome). Tours to Lumbini are organized by numerous companies, the majority of which are located in India. These are the tour operators that most American companies utilize when they put together tours encompassing many different locations.

Tours to Lumbini often include Nepal trekking, popular with young adventure travelers. While Lumbini Nepal is not directly within the Kathmandu Valley, a hub for trekkers, it does often appear on itineraries. It is almost on the border of India, to the southwest of Kathmandu and Royal Chitwan National Park.

The history of Lumbini travel dates to long before the birth of Buddha (in 642 BC), as this site was sacred to Hindus for millennia before that time. Maya Devi, so Buddhist tradition goes, was on her way to visit her parents when she felt labor pains. Grasping a branch of a sal tree, she gave birth to Siddharta Gautama. The infant Buddha is said to have immediately announced that this was his last incarnation and took seven steps, under each of which a lotus flower bloomed. Interestingly, it was also under a tree (the bodhi tree) in Bodhgaya where Buddha became enlightened. Trees also feature in the other two sacred Buddhist sites: Sarnath (site of his first sermon) and Kushinagar where he died.

In 249 BC, the great Indian Emperor Ashoka visited Lumbini Nepal and erected four stupas (mound like structures containing Buddhist relics) and a pillar that still stands today. The inscriptions on this pillar were a trademark of the emperor, and are as sacred to Buddhists as the paintings and inscriptions found on the Ajanta Caves in India. Numerous monasteries and temples were built up to the ninth century, after which the site was lost for centuries. While there remains some controversy surrounding his discoveries, the site was rediscovered in 1895 by the German archaeologist Alois Fuhrer who stumbled up the pillar. Lumbini travel and pilgrimages have been popular with Buddhists ever since, and the site was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

Tours to Lumbini will reveal other sacred sites and beautiful monuments in addition to the Pillar of Ashoka. The Maya Devi Temple, dedicated to the mother of the Buddha, is the most important site in the religious complex. It stands over the spot of the birth, as well as the site of Ashoka's stupas. On one side of this graceful white and red sandstone temple is the Puskarni (Sacred Pool) where Maya Devi bathed before the birth, and the newborn received his first purification bathing.

Mountain Flight in Nepal

Among fourteen peaks higher than 8000 meters, eight are in Nepal. Including other many peaks the flight continues towards the North and East of Kathmandu. The flight generally takes off in the morning and lasts for one full hour. This is the quickest way to get a close look at Mt. Everest, the highest mountains in the world. Other mountains that can be viewed at close range are Nuptse (7879 M), Lhotse (8501 M), Cho Oyu (8000M), Makalu (8475 M) and Kanchenjunga (8584 M). The mountain flight airlines have large and clear windows and provide superlative sights of the Great Himalayan Range. This mountain flight/Everest Experience is meant especially for those who don’t want to leave Nepal without touching the sacred and majestic Himalaya without walking several days.

The flight heads north east upon take off and soon after the emerald green or golden paddy fields below, depending on the time of the year, start giving way to green sub alpine forests.

Within the few minutes one is already flying above the snowy outlines of the greater Himalaya at an altitude of 2000 to 25000 feet above the ground and shows you the Himalayan Range like never before. Unless you decide to take up mountaineering, this is the closest view of Mt. Everest that you'll ever see

Mountains Seen on Everest Mountain Flight.

The first view will be north of Kathmandu Valley, starting with the 8013m high Shisha Pangma, the 14th highest mountain in the world, which is located in Tibet, a few kilometers from the border. Then come a series of several smaller peaks beginning with Dorje Lakpa (6966m) which looks like the figure eight and is located on the eastern edge of Langtang National Park, followed by Phurbi Ghyachu (6637m) on its right, the 5970m, Cho Oyu, Pumori, Nuptse, Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga and even glimpses of the Tibetan Plateau, Choba Bhamare, Gauri Shankar (7134m) named after Lord Shiva and his consort, Melungtse (7181m) all part of the Rolwaling range.

The Nepali name Sagarmatha means “mother of the skies” while the Tibetan name Chomolongma means ‘mother of the universe”. In 1999 Everest was found to have grown by at least six inches since the last survey bringing its total height to 8850m.

Jutting up behind Lhotse (8516m) and Nuptse (7855m) Everest is as distinct as is it should be for a mountain of its status.

OTHER MOUNTAIN FLIGHTS

another possibility to have best view without physical effort are Annapurna Mountain Flight and the Jomsom Mountain Flight. Both these are available on a charter basis only. You are requested to kindly contact us for more details on such flights. There are few flights between Pokhara and Jomsom is like a mountain flight itself. Passing between the spectacular Fish-tail Mountain, Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri mountains, this flight is an experience in itself.
